Replacing a home window? Or installing a brand-new window in a dark room? There are several design choices you’ll have to make with your windows before the contractors can install them. One of which is picking out the right window size for each room.
While the size of window replacements may not vary much as the window opening remains the same, there is more flexibility when installing a new window in a wall. This is also true if you are purposely altering the size of a pre-existing window opening. Of course, the hard part is deciding what window size you actually want for your room. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Window Décor Placement: You’ll want to consider how the window looks after any window décor has been added. There should also be plenty of room around the sides and top for hanging curtain rods and hardware.
- Light Penetration: Windows that are small or that feature a lot of space between the top edge and ceiling won’t allow much light into a room. If you want maximum light penetration, consider taller windows or bay windows.
- Safety & Function: Many municipalities follow the International Residential Code for window installation, which recommends windowsills be no more than 44 inches from the floor. This allows people to escape through the window more easily in the event of a fire.
- Design Consistency: If you are only installing one or two windows, you might also want to take the styles of the other home windows into account. Maintain design consistency by choosing a same or similar window type of as other the windows already in place.
