One of the most dreaded issues a homeowner can face is dealing with a major mold issue. Not only are mold spores unsightly, but they can have harmful consequences for residents. According to the Center for Disease Control, mold exposure could cause the following reactions (and others):
- Coughing
- Wheezing
- Fever
- Shortness of breath
- Asthma in children
Address the Problem Before It Occurs
As with most house problems, identifying potential mold problems before they happen is the simplest (and most cost-effective) way to address the issue. Mold commonly grows on places like windowsills since these areas are likely to be exposed to moisture on a regular basis.
Keeping your windowsills dry is key. Ensure that windows remain tightly closed when it’s raining, as even a small opening is a potential for mold growth. If you keep plants on your windowsill, water them away from the window. Keep a plastic or clay barrier underneath them to prevent drainage from reaching your windowsill.
Clean Your Windows Regularly to Prevent Mold
Mold spores can exist on windows even if not immediately invisible to the naked eye. If you notice small, discolored areas on your windowsill, it’s important to immediately treat the affected area with a bleach mixture. You can try a simple solution of one part bleach to three parts water.
Regularly cleaning your windowsills with this mixture can keep existing mold at bay while preventing additional mold from forming.
Discourage Mold Growth by Controlling Your Air Quality
Invest in a quality dehumidifier and remove excess moisture from your air. Dehumidifiers are an essential tool for homes that have had prior mold problems. They can also be beneficial in bathrooms that have no vent to draw out shower steam.
Keep in mind that dehumidifiers do need to be cleaned regularly to prohibit mold from growing within their compartments.
